Valdis Dombrovskis*

Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for People

Since October 2020, Valdis Dombrovskis has served as the European Commission Executive Vice-President for an Economy that Works for People and Trade, influencing EU economic and trade policies. From 2019, he held a similar role focused on promoting economic growth, social fairness, and financial stability.

Between 2016 and 2019, Dombrovskis was the European Commission Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue, also overseeing Financial Stability, Financial Services, and the Capital Markets Union. His work was crucial in fortifying the EU’s financial system post-crisis.

In 2014, he briefly served as a Member of the European Parliament and the Latvian Parliament. As Latvia’s Prime Minister from 2009 to 2014, he led the country through economic reforms during the global financial crisis. He was also an MEP from 2004 to 2009, impacting European economic policy.

Earlier, Dombrovskis was Latvia’s Finance Minister from 2002 to 2004 and the Chief Economist at the Bank of Latvia from 2001 to 2002.
